If your app has no login page (a pure API, or a site where only bots authenticate), a request to an auth:sanctum route without an Accept: application/json header crashes with a 500:

Route [login] not defined.

The Authenticate middleware tries to build a redirect to route('login') before your exception handler gets a say. Tests usually miss it because postJson() / getJson() send the JSON header for you.

Fix in bootstrap/app.php:

->withMiddleware(function (Middleware $middleware): void {
    $middleware->redirectGuestsTo(fn () => null);
})
->withExceptions(function (Exceptions $exceptions): void {
    $exceptions->shouldRenderJsonWhen(
        fn (Request $request) => $request->getHost() === config('app.api_domain') || $request->expectsJson(),
    );
})

Now plain curl -X POST gets a clean JSON 401. Worth one test that uses $this->post() instead of postJson() to lock it in.
