Deleting rows in a migration? Re-point rows that cascade from them first

When a data migration moves records to a new table and then deletes the old rows, check every foreign key that points at them with cascadeOnDelete(). Delete first and you also delete whatever hangs off them, often history or audit rows you meant to keep.

Order that works:

// 1. Make the FK nullable (in the same migration)
Schema::table('notifications', fn (Blueprint $t) => $t->unsignedBigInteger('destination_id')->nullable()->change());

// 2. Point the dependent rows at the new home and detach them
DB::statement('UPDATE notifications n SET recipient_id = r.id, destination_id = NULL
    FROM destinations d JOIN recipients r ON r.email = d.email
    WHERE n.destination_id = d.id');

// 3. Only now delete
DB::table('destinations')->where('channel', 'email')->delete();

Worth a migration test that seeds the old shape and asserts the history rows still exist afterwards.
