Check for prefix-covered indexes before you drop one

If an index starts with the same columns as a longer index, the short one adds nothing for reads. A composite index (source_id, published_at) already serves where source_id = ?, so a separate (source_id) index only costs disk and write time.

-- Definitions to compare
SELECT indexname, indexdef
FROM pg_indexes
WHERE tablename = 'your_table'
ORDER BY indexname;

Before dropping an index, also check its scan count in pg_stat_user_indexes. Those counters reset on server restart, and some managed Postgres hosts reset them when the database sleeps, so a zero count alone is not proof.

Drop with DROP INDEX CONCURRENTLY in a migration with $withinTransaction = false, as in the thread above.
