Capping a list after parsing doesn't cap memory: trim the input first

A parser that builds an object for every item will run out of memory before a array_slice() after it ever runs. If you only need the first N items, cut the input string before handing it to the parser.

// Find where item N+1 starts, then keep everything before it.
preg_match_all('/<item[\s>]/', $xml, $matches, PREG_OFFSET_CAPTURE);

if (count($matches[0]) > $max) {
    $xml = substr($xml, 0, $matches[0][$max][1]).'

';
}

Two checks that make this easy to get right:
