> When you run the same agent across many models through OpenRouter (with laravel/ai, Prism or plain `Http`), some models ignore `response_format: {type: json_schema}`. They return prose or loosely shaped JSON, and the SDK's structured output comes back empty, without an error.

> What these models do follow is a forced function call. Define a single tool whose parameters are your schema and require it:

>     'function' => [
>         'name' => 'record_result',

> 'tool_choice' => ['type' => 'function', 'function' => ['name' => 'record_result']],
> ```

> Then read `choices[0].message.tool_calls[0].function.arguments` and `json_decode` it. Check `finish_reason`: `length` means the output was cut off before the tool call finished, so raise `max_tokens`.

> Also, OpenRouter routes one model to many providers at different prices and quantizations (fp4/fp8). If you are evaluating a model or budgeting for it, pin the provider with `provider: {order: [...], allow_fallbacks: false}`, or your scores and costs will mix several versions of the model.
